Unit 30 D2

Describe and evaluate the impact that file format, compression techniques, image resolution and colour depth have on file size and image quality.

This shows how different compression techniques and image resolution affect a picture and what we use it for.
In the original the colours and outlines of shapes are defined, it has a high image resolution so that it could be blown up without the picture going fuzzy.
In the picture next to the original I have put less colours. The picture is a GIF file and is smaller than the original JPEG, the picture only has 16 colours and would be good for use in a book as if they used the original it would cost a lot to print this pic in lots of books.
The picture underneath the original is also a GIF but has more colours, I have used 32 colours. The file size is still smaller than the original but there is not much change in quality, the edges are a little less defined and there are less colours.
The last picture has 128 colours, it looks very similar to the original but is a smaller file size. This would be used as a thumbnail.

  1. www. D2. Well done. You have clearly explained why different file types and compression techniques would be used, and illustrated it appropriately.
