Software utilities are system software that is designed to help analyse, configure and maintain a computer. there are different types of software utilities. The ones I am going to look at are security virus protection/ firewalls, clean up tools for removal of cookies and/or internet history and/or defragmentation and drive formatting.

Security virus protection is a piece of software that protects your computer from viruses that could be harmful to the operating system, most have 2 purposes they stop you downloading a virus by scanning the file and if a virus is in the computer it gets rid of it. 

Firewalls are pieces of software that can block intruders by searching for suspicious words, domain names and stopping communication with any suspicious activity. The definition of a firewall is to protect a network or system from unauthorised access.

Clean up tools are used to stop websites storing  information about you and storing the websites you have viewed. 

Defrangmentation is a process that organises the contents of the storage devices used to store small files. This can make the computer run quicker. 

Drive formatting is when you erase all the data on the hard drive so you can use it again.
